Graded Cards Explained: PSA, CGC, BGS, SGC, TAG & More
By Moonlight Collectibles
Graded cards are an important part of the trading card hobby. Many collectors buy graded cards because the card has been reviewed by a professional grading company, assigned a grade, and sealed inside a protective slab.
At Moonlight Collectibles, we may carry graded Pokémon cards, sports cards, TCG cards, and other collectible cards depending on availability, demand, condition, and market value.
What Is a Graded Card?
A graded card is a trading card that has been submitted to a grading company for review. The grading company evaluates the card, assigns a grade, and seals it inside a plastic holder commonly called a slab.
Graded cards may be popular because they offer:
• Professional condition review
• Authentication support
• A visible assigned grade
• Long-term protection inside a slab
• Easier comparison for buyers
• Stronger display appeal
• Collector confidence
The assigned grade can affect the card’s value, but market demand still matters.
Common Grading Companies
Several grading companies are recognized in the trading card hobby. Some of the most common include:
• PSA
• CGC
• BGS
• SGC
• TAG
• Other recognized grading companies
Each company may use its own grading scale, slab design, label style, and grading standards.
What Does the Grade Mean?
The grade represents the grading company’s opinion of the card’s condition at the time it was reviewed.
A higher grade usually means the card was judged to be in stronger condition.
Common grading factors may include:
• Centering
• Corners
• Edges
• Surface
• Print quality
• Scratches
• Dents
• Whitening
• Creases
• Factory defects
A card’s grade can influence value, but it does not guarantee future market performance.
PSA Graded Cards
PSA is one of the most recognized grading companies in the trading card market. Many collectors use PSA grades when comparing card values, especially for Pokémon and sports cards.
PSA 10 cards are often highly desired, but value depends on the card, player, Pokémon, rarity, demand, and population.
CGC Graded Cards
CGC is also common in Pokémon, TCG, and collectible card markets. CGC slabs are often used for modern and vintage cards, and many collectors value their grading and authentication process.
BGS Graded Cards
BGS is known for graded cards and subgrade-style grading history. Some collectors especially like BGS for high-end cards, autographs, and premium slabs.
SGC Graded Cards
SGC is popular in sports cards and has also gained attention across other collecting categories. Many collectors like SGC for its slab style and turnaround history.
TAG Graded Cards
TAG is a newer technology-focused grading company that some collectors like because of its detailed grading reports and modern slab presentation.
Slab Condition Matters
Even when the card inside is graded, the slab itself may show normal handling wear.
Slab condition may include:
• Light scratches
• Scuffs
• Minor case marks
• Label variation
• Normal handling signs
Unless a listing clearly states otherwise, minor slab wear may be present.
Market Value Can Change
A graded card’s value can change based on:
• Card demand
• Grade
• Grading company
• Population report
• Player or Pokémon popularity
• Set demand
• Market timing
• Condition of the slab
• Recent sold prices
A graded card is not guaranteed to increase in value.
Buying Graded Cards
Before buying a graded card, customers should review:
• Card name
• Year
• Set
• Grade
• Grading company
• Certification number if shown
• Photos
• Slab condition
• Recent market demand
• Listing description
Customers should buy graded cards based on the item shown and described, not only based on assumptions about future value.
Raw vs Graded Cards
Raw cards are not professionally graded and may cost less than graded cards.
Graded cards usually cost more because they have been reviewed, slabbed, and assigned a grade.
Raw cards may be better for collectors who enjoy binder collecting or submitting cards themselves.
Graded cards may be better for collectors who want a card already reviewed and protected inside a slab.
Grading Results Are Not Guaranteed
If a customer buys a raw card and later submits it for grading, Moonlight Collectibles does not guarantee any specific grade, grading result, grade increase, or future value unless explicitly stated in the listing.
Even cards that look clean can grade lower than expected due to centering, surface marks, print defects, or other issues.
Moonlight Collectibles’ Approach
Moonlight Collectibles reviews graded cards based on demand, condition, market movement, grading company, grade, liquidity, and customer interest.
Our goal is to provide clear product information so customers understand what graded card they are purchasing.
